The Muppet Christmas Carol - I was at a dollar store the other day paying for something with change and the woman behind me offered to pay for me. I thanked her and told her I was OK. She offered again and I said you are so kind I am not being proud I am just spending change. She looked at me as though I were extremely impolite or extremely crazy and said 'It's not about pride it's about people helping each other'. She was of course right. Life is not fair and gifts for the sake of ego or implicitly at the expense of another's dignity are not charitable. As I was too clumsy to correct my error at the time I hope that she later realized that I was not insane or intentionally insulting just stupid... People are not always who we think they are ...
